Senior Staff Hardware Test Engineering Architect

Agility Robotics

San Francisco, CARemoteSalem, OR

Agility Robotics is a pioneer. Our robot, Digit, is the first to be sold into workplaces across the globe. Our team is differentiated by its expertise in imagining, engineering, and delivering robots with advanced mobility, dexterity, intelligence, and efficiency -- robots specifically designed to work alongside people, in spaces built for people. Every day, we break through engineering challenges and invent new solutions and capabilities that will one day make robots commonplace and approachable. This work is our passion and our responsibility: our mission is to make businesses more productive and people’s lives more fulfilling.

About the Role:

The Senior Staff Hardware Test Engineering Architect will report to the Test Engineering and Services Director and will be responsible for developing a robust test infrastructure for Agility Robotics. The architect will drive the creation of the testing system layout for the manufacturing, engineering and innovation groups. He/She will work closely with the electrical, mechanical, software, and manufacturing teams to support test infrastructure, development and execution across the organization.

About the Team:

We are currently designing the next generation of Digit for commercial scale. The scale of the system and reliability that must be achieved are orders of magnitude higher than any existing bipedal platform, including our own, and the primary method that this will be achieved is by rigorous design and substantial testing. The test engineering team owns the processes and support structure around the execution of tests, and therefore will be a primary focal point of the definition and validation of success of the product. The Senior Test Engineering Architecture will be responsible for creating the test infrastructure and control processes within Agility.

About The Work:

  • Develop and maintain test automation infrastructure that supports and exercises Agility’s products at the component and solution levels.
  • Develop and maintain a deep knowledge of all subsystems used in Agility’s products and calibration and test equipment.
  • Assist in translating system requirements and engineering specifications into tests.
  • Negotiate test rigor and trade-offs with multiple stakeholders.
  • Work with talented cross-functional teams to drive innovative, elegant testing solutions that meet validate requirements.
  • Support hiring and performance reviews for test engineering group.
  • Support the oversight of test systems workflows, assignments and help to refine the processes in test engineering for collaboration within all disciplines.
  • Monitor test infrastructure deliverables and project timelines and ensure the objectives are met.
  • Mentor and guide junior test engineers.
  • Promote and contribute to a safe, collaborative work environment.
  • Depending on experience and alignment with position requirements, a west coast remote work configuration may be possible. In that case, travel to Agility’s design facility on a regular basis would still be required.

About You:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • Minimum 10 or more years of relevant professional experience
  • Minimum 5 or more years’ experience working as a test architect or similar test infrastructure role.
  • Experience in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Experience with test management platforms and test framework tools and systems.
  • Hands on experience integrating test platforms/frameworks into third party manufacturing data collection/configuration systems.
  • Proven project management skills
  • Authorization to work in the US

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Advanced degrees with professional engineering experience
  • Skilled in conflict resolution, contract negotiation
  • Broad design experience relevant to robotics: embedded systems, high-speed signals, servo drives, Ethernet/EtherCAT, cameras, Lidar, IMU, CPU/GPU integration, etc.
  • Ideally be on site at Agility’s design facility as needed (minimum 2 days per week and as needed to support design activities, reviews, prototype builds, etc.).
  • Knowledge of relevant technologies which may include:
  • Mechatronics / Robotics
  • Mechanical and electrical interfaces
  • Communication protocols
  • Sensors, actuators, controllers
  • Kinematics of mechanisms
  • Vision and display systems
  • Understanding of structured product development (requirements-driven engineering, documentation, rigorous verification, etc.)
  • Engineering verification test development and execution
