• Experience with testing satellite communications payloads, optical communications payload, spacecraft bus and constituent subsystems, or space vehicle level.

• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
• High sense of ownership, urgency, and drive; resourceful, and able to deliver results with minimal direction
• Excellent oral and written communication and leadership skills with strong sense of ownership and drive
• Ability to coordinate between engineering, test lab, and technicians (if applicable) and schedule testing resources
• Experience as the technical lead, leading small groups of other test engineers across multiple designs
• Experience in developing and reviewing requirements to support various test phases
• Experience in test plan development related to established space hardware test standards (GEVS/SMC-S-016) or military standards (MIL-STD-810, DO-160)
• Strong debugging/troubleshooting skills
• Solid understanding of system engineering test fundamentals
• Computational problem solving and test automation/optimization in one or more of the following: Python, Matlab, LabVIEW, C/C++, Docker, Rust on a Linux platform.
• Experience with on-orbit payload verification or satellite testing
• Experience with current and upcoming RF standards in cellular (4G/5G), OFDM/WiMAX, 802.11ad, microwave backhaul, DVB-S2 / DVB-C, OR similar broadband wireless standards
• Experience with communications theory and RF systems: OFDM, MIMO, free-space optics, polarization, spread spectrum, matching, S-parameters, losses, coherence, etc.
• Understanding of the challenges associated with low-Earth-orbit satellite communications: frequency bands, regulatory, earth stations, path loss, power spectral density, power flux density, etc.
• Experience in wireless (satellite and/or terrestrial) system design and/or system integration, RF system analysis
• Experience with RF measurement equipment, including: power meters, spectrum analyzers, vector signal generators, network analyzers, oscilloscopes
• Experience with communication and electrical system test equipment such as vector spectrum analyzers, vector signal generators, power supplies, and oscilloscopes
• Detailed knowledge of satellite communication link budgets (RF)
• Familiarity with software development and hardware integration related to satellite payloads or ground systems
• Broad knowledge of satellite communication link budgets (RF or Optical)
• Broad knowledge and experience in multiple disciplines related to satellite or space systems, including design, integration, test, operation, maintenance, and configuration/data management
• Experience supporting system engineering of space and/or ground systems development efforts including meeting cost, schedule, and performance goals.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. The RF System engineer will engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary team to design, integrate, and test innovative product solutions.

The RF System Engineer will work closely with colleagues throughout Project Kuiper’s inter-disciplinary team and collaborate with key partners and suppliers in order to ensure our system exceeds customer expectations. The RF System Engineer must be responsive, flexible, innovative, and able to succeed within a collaborative, fast-paced, and dynamic environment.

As a member of the KGS Engineering Integrated Systems Solutions organization, the RF System engineer will be responsible for all aspects of the requirements definition, interface development, integration, test, verification, and validation of one or more of the following: the satellite bus, RF payloads, optical payloads, custom ground terminals, or custom user terminals. This includes testing, analyzing, and optimizing the particular satellite or ground element being developed, and ensuring that it meets the needs of the specific customer and/or target application. Testing efforts include functional and performance testing through various environmental conditions as required to ensure system integrity. Responsibilities also include the design and test of support equipment necessary to enable efficient test execution and requirements verification.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience leading large-scale programs with a diverse set of talented individuals, as well as with partner organizations (including government agencies).


Key job responsibilities
• Working within a project team and taking responsibility for a high bandwidth, low earth orbit communications satellite constellation and terrestrial communication technologies
• Define requirements, develop interface control documents, and perform requirements derivation and allocation analysis and technical budgets with tools developed to drive designs, correlate models with test data, and develop verification evidence.
• Deep-dives into component and subsystem designs to document expectations, evaluate tests, remedy test failures, and provide quick feedback to improve performance
• Collaborating with diverse technical teams such as software, mechanical, modem, and compliance teams to validate expectations for system-level and network-level operations, from concept through execution
• Integrating the end-to-end RF communications system. Meeting with customers internally and externally to select components
• Defining test plans and procedures for lab and RF chamber testing, based on identified requirements for subsystems and for the overall system
• Defining test plans and procedures for on-orbit payload verification or satellite testing, based on identified requirements
• Analyzing and mitigating potential self-interference and other system interference issues
• Implementing, validating, and optimizing RF lab set-ups composed of antenna, measurement equipment, and prototype equipment
• Analyzing RF link budget / line-up for test set-ups and for the deployed system
• Configuring test equipment for automated operation: satellite link emulator, spectrum analyzer, signal generator, etc.
• Meeting with suppliers to select enabling lab technologies
• Interpreting test results, troubleshooting issues, performing root-cause analysis for any test failures
• Documenting test results, test coverage, and other key performance indicators (KPI) metrics
• Communicating status and issues effectively with developers and managers
• Shepherding payload subsystems through test campaigns throughout the development lifecycle, from concept to implementation to integration.
• Analyze test data and engage with others in Kuiper, customers, suppliers, or partners to evaluate the product performance and provide proactive feedback on potential improvements.

These solutions are tailored to meet the needs of government and international customers for both space-based and terrestrial applications. The Integrated Engineering Solutions organization under KGS Engineering plays a vital role in the entire life cycle of the development of an engineering solution, including architecture development, requirements and interface definition through assembly, integration, and test (AI&T). verification, and post-delivery and operational support.
