The GRC Platforms and capabilities team within GRC is responsible for building and implementing technology solutions for risk management. One such platform is Smart Monitoring that leverages high technology, automation, and data science to detect, predict and prevent risks. The Smart Monitoring Center of Excellence is a comprised of group of experts that leverage the Smart Monitoring platform to build and manage Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) that monitor risks across AXP, supporting Business Units and Staff Groups, Product Lines and Processes.
We are seeking a Director of Smart Monitoring Center of Excellence (SM COE) to lead a group of risk management professional and grow in 2022+. The incumbent will be responsible for identifying opportunities to apply new and innovative ways to monitor risks through KRIs and execute appropriate strategies in partnership with Business, OE, Compliance, and other stakeholder teams. This is a new role at American Express and will require setting up a new team and developing its operating model.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead innovation to identify and implement new and unique ways of monitoring risks using data science/machine learning
- Design and build comprehensive and complete control testing using the Source of Origin and applying MECE (mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive) approach. Also support data validation, and contribute to creation of coding logic to build key risk indicators (KRIs).
- Partner with Business teams (Process Owners), OE teams, Compliance, and other stakeholder groups to identify opportunities to bolster AXP’s risk monitoring and control environment.
- Be a trusted advisor for key business stakeholders for matters related to the KRI/Smart Monitoring testing environment across their products and processes.
- Partner closely with platform and capabilities teams to understand end -to-end data transfer and hand-off risks associated to process fulfillment and delivery of customer promises.
- Apply innovative concepts to measure and manage risk consistent with regulatory and governance requirements.
- Identify and escalate to senior leadership observations, high residual-risk areas and emerging risk themes.
- Partner with Technology, Risk, Product Management, Compliance and other key Subject Matter Experts on initiatives to ensure standards/deliverables are achieved.
- Exemplify strength in the American Express Leadership Model: set the agenda, bring others with you and do it the right way, and put enterprise thinking first.
- Lead, engage, and inspire a large global team of high performing risk management and data science professionals.
Compliance Language
- 8+ years of experience working in risk and control environment / risk management
- 6+ years of experience working with data and leading analytical projects. Exceptional analytical skills. Experience in machine learning is a plus.
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Business, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering disciplines.
- Qualitative/quantitative solutioning/problem solving in complex and unstructured environment.
- Highly detail oriented.
- Should have a technical acumen. Experience in technical skills such as Big Data, SQL, Hive, Python and automation is a plus.
- Expert project management skills with proven record of successfully leading and implementing complex, large-scale and cross-functional initiatives. Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities
- Demonstrated success in building strong partnerships through collaboration and leading large initiatives in a matrix environment
- Good understanding of AXPs risk environment (pillars, committees etc.) and programs (PRSA, NPA, OREs etc.), products and services
- Excellent problem solving and organizational skills
- Strong people leader and team player with a demonstrated ability to manage a high performing team and create a highly effective and results-driven culture
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact with all levels of management
- Ability to bring structure to ambiguous areas of opportunity and thrive in an unstructured, fast paced environment.
Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
