We are an in-office company, and our expectation is that employees primarily work from their Applied Intuition office 5 days a week. However, we also recognize the importance of flexibility and trust our employees to manage their schedules responsibly. This may include occasional remote work, starting the day with morning meetings from home before heading to the office, or leaving earlier when needed to accommodate family commitments. (Note: this is not applicable for EpiSci roles)

About the role
As a Senior Scene Engineer on the Engineering team, you will lead the design, development, and optimization of a high-performance 4D (3 spatial + time dimensions) scene representation suite of algorithms and data structures, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability. You will write efficient code, conduct code reviews, optimize performance, and develop robust scene architectures and algorithms. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will translate requirements into technical solutions while mentoring junior engineers. The role also involves continuous innovation, testing, debugging, documentation, and contributing to CI/CD pipelines and security compliance.
At EpiSci, you will:
- Lead the design, development, and optimization of 3D/4D scene reconstruction algorithms and data structures
- Architect and implement scalable, reliable, and maintainable software solutions
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, engineering, and DevOps
- Drive continuous improvement and innovation of 3D/4D scene reconstruction applications
- Ensure adherence to best coding practices, design patterns, and industry standards
- Write, test, and debug efficient modern C++ code (C++ 2017+) for complex software solutions
Were looking for someone who has:
- Master’s degree in computer science, robotics or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of Computational Geometry algorithms such as ray casting/tracing
- Knowledge of Spatial Partitioning data structures such as voxels, octrees and/or kd-trees
- Familiarity with SLAM techniques, algorithms and data structures
- Familiarity with path planning algorithms
- Previous experience building similar systems in any domain (Air/Sea/Land/etc)
- 5+ years of hands-on experience developing performant modern C++ (2014+)
- Strong procedural and object-oriented programming experience that employs clean code principles and good OOP design patterns/principles
- Experience developing in Docker and containerized development environments, and using Linux-based operating systems (e.g., RHEL, Ubuntu)
- Experience using git, Visual Studio Code, GitLab, SonarQube, and Artifactory or Azure Container registry
Travel Requirements:
- Willing to travel for company business between our offices, as well as to customer sites (~10%)
- This role can be based in one of the following locations: Washington, DC; Mountain View, CA; San Diego, CA; Ann Arbor, MI; or Fort Walton Beach, FL. While preference will be given to candidates local to these areas, applicants from other U.S. locations will also be considered, provided they are willing to travel or potentially relocate for the position.
Security Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must hold or be eligible for a U.S. Secret security clearance

Nice to have:
- PhD degree in computer science, robotics, or related engineering field
- 7+ years of experience developing software for C++ (C++20+) and Python
- Experience embedding C++ in Python and vice versa
- Experience working projects related to national security for one or more government agencies
- Understanding of Service-oriented Architecture and message broker vs data broker paradigms
- Familiarity with hardware acceleration utilizing SIMD accelerators, GPUs or similar
Compensation at Applied Intuition for eligible roles includes base salary, equity, and benefits. Base salary is a single component of the total compensation package, which may also include equity in the form of options and/or restricted stock units, comprehensive health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance coverage, 401k retirement benefits with employer match, learning and wellness stipends, and paid time off. Note that benefits are subject to change and may vary based on jurisdiction of employment.
Applied Intuition pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum intended target base salary for new hire salaries for the position. The actual base salary offered to a successful candidate will additionally be influenced by a variety of factors including experience, credentials & certifications, educational attainment, skill level requirements, interview performance, and the level and scope of the position.
