Athletes Unlimited is looking for a Controller to oversee our accounting, prepare financial reports, monitor cash flow, manage budgets, and ensure compliance with financial regulations. This position will work closely with our COO and Director of Finance to ensure accurate reporting across our four professional sports leagues. This position is full-time, remote, and reports to the COO.

Responsibilities

  • Complete month-end close tasks including preparing journal entries, bank statement reconciliations, and supporting schedules
  • Manage the preparation of financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements
  • Provide financial reports to senior management and contribute to strategic financial planning
  • Work with vendors and customers to monitor the status of open payables and receivables and resolve discrepancies
  • Oversee reporting of sales, use, and other tax deposits and returns across jurisdictions
  • Monitor cash flow and manage treasury functions to ensure adequate liquidity  
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, and financial analysis
  • Lead in updating company accounting procedures in line with GAAP principles
  • Participate in fulfilling annual external audit requirements
  • Work closely with external auditors and tax advisors to ensure compliance and address issues as they arise
  • Ensure timely filing of tax returns, including 1099 and other relevant tax forms
  • Lead investigations into and prepare flux analysis for operating expenses
  • Pursue optimization and automation of existing processes
  • Manage accounting books across multiple business units
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and regulatory changes affecting the financial landscape

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field. CPA or CMA designation preferred.
  • Minimum of 9-12 years’ experience in an accounting role
  • Experience with and knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting and accounting principles
  • Experience with financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management
  • Experience/proficiency with accounting software (Quickbooks, Sage, Xero, etc.) 
  • Advanced Excel experience (pivot tables, lookups, etc.)
  • Experience with e-commerce platforms preferred (Shopify, Stripe, etc.)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality 
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States
