ERG Ecoservices is seeking two Crew Manager(s) to oversee field crews for the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) Terrestrial Program. The AIM Program is a critical initiative focused on collecting high-quality ecological data to guide natural resource management decisions across public lands. The Crew Manager will be responsible for supervising daily crew operations, supporting field logistics, performing QC (quality control) of collected data, and ensuring safe and efficient fieldwork. Crew managers will report to ERG Project Managers.

This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, experience conducting AIM fieldwork, experience with logistics coordination, and the ability to motivate and support field crews working in remote, challenging environments. Crew Managers will conduct periodic site visits with crews throughout the season, so the ability to conduct fieldwork, including camping for multiple nights, is also required.

Job Description:

  • Crew supervision and management. Oversee multiple field crews collecting AIM terrestrial data (botanical, soil, and landscape metrics).
  • Perform frequent check-ins with crews to ensure project goals and deadlines are being met
  • Monitor fieldwork performance, provide guidance, and address any issues as they arise
  • Logistical Planning and Support. Assist in planning evaluations and field operations, including reviewing hitch plans, assisting in site evaluations, and replacing broken or damaged gear
  • Coordinate with field crews, ERG Project Managers, and BLM project partners to ensure smooth field deployments
  • Troubleshoot logistical challenges, such as site access and unforeseen weather delays
  • Data Quality Control (QC). Perform regular quality control (QC) checks on field data using tools such as ArcGIS, FieldMaps, Survey123, and Excel-based plot trackers
  • Provide feedback and corrections to crews as needed to maintain data integrity
  • Field and Safety Support. Visit crews in the field periodically to provide in-person support and ensure data collection methods are being correctly deployed
  • Promote safety culture by ensuring crews follow all safety protocols and best practices
  • Training and Mentorship. Assist with training new field crew members on AIM protocols, field safety, and data collection techniques
  • Serve as a mentor to crew leads, providing technical guidance and leadership support
  • Reporting and Communication. Provide updates on project progress to ERG leadership and BLM contacts regularly
  • Combination of office work (data review, logistical planning) and field visits
  • Field visits will require spending multiple days working and camping in remote locations in adverse weather conditions
  • ERG will provide work vehicles
  • Field per diem provided when applicable

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, rangeland ecology, natural resource management, biology, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in field data collection, field crew management, or similar roles
  • Familiarity with the BLM AIM Program protocols or similar ecological monitoring programs
  • Experience using GIS-based tools (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, FieldMaps, Survey123) for data collection and mapping
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with an ability to manage multiple crews and tasks simultaneously
  • Proven ability to work effectively in remote field environments under challenging conditions
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive 4WD vehicles on rough terrain

  • Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Experience with soil health, vegetation monitoring, and botanical identification
  • Previous experience supervising crews in remote, multi-day field operations
  • Wilderness First Aid or similar field safety training certification
  • Proficiency in quality control (QC) of ecological data
This position is eligible for health insurance, overtime, accrued sick leave and 401k participation after four months of employment.
