What’s the role?

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to join our User Experience Foundation initiative! You will be working in a hybrid iOS, Android, and Web organization alongside other teams focused on Design Systems, Accessibility, and the core user experience of the Etsy product.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?

You will manage one of the teams sitting within the UX Foundation initiative, an organization within our Enablement group responsible for maintaining and evolving Etsy’s design system and accessibility standards.
Currently, one team is focused on re-building web and app component libraries to meet Etsy’s highest UX standards, while the other is focused on enabling adherence to our design system through Figma, Storybook, and other tooling and partnership.
Collage is Etsy’s design system, a set of building blocks, tools, and standards for creating accessible, on-brand experiences for Etsy’s marketplace.
Our vision is that by 2026, Collage components are the foundation of all new feature development at Etsy and an evolved Collage library enables a cohesive end user experience that makes buying and selling intuitive in a marketplace that is unmistakably Etsy.

What does the day-to-day look like?

Lead a team of 5 to 8 Web, iOS, or Android engineers focused on Design Systems and Accessibility. At Etsy, engineering managers have a limited role in the hands-on process of building software, but a very large role in orchestrating and coaching engineers to achieve results together.
Collaborate across Product, Design, and Engineering to deliver high-quality user experiences, occasionally working with Research or Analytics to run A/B experiments and validate product improvements.
Work with other leaders within engineering to develop and evolve engineering processes and best practices.
Prioritize, scope, plan, develop, and deliver projects at various completion stages or definitions when started. Planning and delivery of your team’s roadmap.
Serve as a coach, mentor, and advocate for the engineers on your team.
Participate in the end-to-end recruiting process, hiring, and onboarding exceptional engineering talent.
Foster a culture of learning, collaboration and thoughtful delivery on your teams.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

1+ years of experience directly managing engineers - including providing leadership, mentorship, feedback, and investing in their career growth.
You have experience with modern web technologies such as React or Web Components or with delivering Apps at scale.
Familiarity with Design Systems, Accessibility, or redesigns/re-architectures.
You are an excellent coach, mentor, and developer of engineers, having led both junior and experienced engineers and built a path of opportunities to grow your team seniority over time.
You are highly collaborative and enjoy working with other squads that are part of your organization.
You are a skilled communicator and leader who is able to adapt your style and level of detail to effectively deliver messages upwards, downwards, and broadly around the company.
You value people who are curious, enthusiastic, generous, and responsible.
