THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced and versatile Director of Accounting who thrives in changing and developing environments. We are a small and mighty finance and accounting team managing a $100 million budget for one of the most well-known non-profit EdTech organizations in the world.

Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Accounting will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $100 million and supervise a team of five staff members including functional responsibility over accounting, revenue, reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, audit, investments, taxes, and financial compliance. The Director of Accounting will oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reconciliations, ensuring they comply with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.

While managers handle daily operations, this role requires a more strategic approach by continuously monitoring and evaluating financial processes, identifying potential risks, and implementing necessary changes to controls or processes. This includes not only supervising current operations but also proactively anticipating and addressing issues, ensuring the organization’s financial system and process remains accurate, compliant, and responsive to evolving needs and risks.

Role Responsibilities 

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reconciliations ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Manage annual financial audit, ensuring strong fiscal management and financial controls throughout the year as well as efficient and effective audit preparations
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual global close processes, including India and Brazil subsidiaries
  • Assist in the presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and variance analysis
  • Oversee cash management processes to ensure sufficient liquidity
  • Manage and comply with local, state, federal, and select international reporting requirements and tax filings including the 990
  • Work directly with India and Brazil Heads of Finance for audit, close, and consolidation activities
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting
  • Partner with and support the FP&A team in various business analysis and financial planning projects
  • Ensures strong internal controls and that the organization complies with relevant regulations, such as GAAP, grant compliance, and federal/state requirements.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure adherence to grant compliance by implementing and monitoring internal controls and reviewing grant-related transactions to ensure the appropriate use of funds.
  • Serve as the Controller for Khan Academy

Team Management

  • In partnership with the CFO, manage and support the development of the payroll, expense, and revenue teams 
  • Provide subject matter expertise support to the accounting team with particular attention to revenue recognition and new accounting standards

WHAT YOU BRING

  • CPA required
  • 5+ years of experience as a Controller or similar role, with expertise in overseeing a wide range of financial operations, navigating the complexities of varied revenue models, and effectively engaging in cross-functional collaboration within a mid to large-sized organization.
  • Experience managing complex revenue cases, including earned income and contribution revenue, reviewing contracts, and navigating multiple audits. (ASC 606, ASC 958)
  • Hands-on experience in Sage Intacct, Netsuite, Workday, or similar finance and accounting systems
  • Non-profit experience strongly preferred 
  • Experience with Software as a Service (SaaS), EdTech, a plus 
  • Experience in a multi-entity environment (and/or international subsidiary) a plus but not required
  • Growth mindset and love of learning and development
  • Willingness and ability to roll up your sleeves and join the team in day-to-day operations
  • Proven leadership skills and experience to effectively manage teams and multiple priorities

The target salary range for this position is $185,600 - $232,000 USD / $250,803 - $313,504 CAN. The pay range for this position is a general guideline only. The salary offered will depend on internal pay equity and the candidate’s relevant skills, experience, qualifications, and job market data. Exceptional performers in this role who make an outsized contribution can make well in excess of this range.  Additional incentives are provided as part of the complete total rewards package in addition to comprehensive medical and other benefits.
