JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a talented and experienced Database Platform Engineer to join our dynamic team at Marriott International. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, building and maintaining infrastructure capabilities and supporting automation related to building and operating cloud databases. You will be a subject matter expert for our team on database platform capabilities, and the automation to support operations and use of the platform for numerous other teams at Marriott. Additionally, you will play a crucial role in engineering requirements and patterns to support the business’s database platform needs, driving resilient and cost-effective architecture for these resources. The Senior Database Platform Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automated solutions for database provisioning, configuration, and management. This role requires expertise in database administration, scripting, and automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins). The engineer will optimize database performance, ensure high availability, and automate routine tasks. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills are essential, along with experience in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and containerization (Kubernetes).
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Education and Experience
Required:
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Or related equivalent experience/certification.
- 7+ years’ experience in information technology including:
- 5+ years database engineer and administration experience
- Proven experience working with modern software delivery products and related DevOps technologies
- Proven experience working with developer tools such as GitHub, Artifactory, SonarQube, Terraform, etc.
- Proven experience developing and managing cloud database capabilities (Couchbase, Capella, etc.)
- Strong experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
- Strong experience with scripting and automation and orchestration platforms (Harness, AWX)
- Strong experience with secure by design and resilient by design databases particularly related to AWS managed resources
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Self-motivated and results-driven, with a passion for learning and growth
Preferred:
- Graduate degree in Computer Science or related field
- Expertise related on CI/CD pipelines, version control, and security best practices in relation to database IaC provisioning and operations at scale
- Proven record of automating day 2 tasks and providing these automations as a product to operations focused teams
CORE WORK ACTIVITIES
- Develop Infrastructure as Code to automate database provisioning process
- Design, implement, and optimize TF that will be used by automation platforms to deploy Marriott’s database resources
- Integrate with developer self-service platforms to expose these capabilities
- Deliver high quality documentation and artifacts regarding database resource capabilities
- Documentation as code for database platform
- Producing and maintaining architecture diagrams, conceptual diagrams, etc.
- Automating Day 2 Operations
- Identify, plan, and deliver automations to streamline the operation of repeated database operational tasks
- Provide documentation, training, and support to users of these automations to drive adoption
- Requirements Engineering and Discovery
- Work with consumers of this platform to gather feedback and refine requirements accordingly
- Lead the evaluation and adoption of new database capabilities and technologies, gathering requirements and executing rapid PoCs as needed to determine feasibility
- Detailed implementation planning to enable our team to realize these new opportunities efficiently and in collaboration with related functions at Marriott.
- Reliability and Operations of the Database Platform and related automations
- Monitor, analyze, and improve the reliability and performance of the core database platform
- Implement and maintain best practices to ensure system availability and scalability of the database platform

The salary range for this position is $98,500 to $171,600 annually. In addition to the annual salary, the position will be eligible to receive an annual bonus.
