What you need to know about this position 

The Food Safety/Sanitation Principal Scientist must possess the educational background, practical experience, and technical skills to ensure effective deployment of MDLZ risk-based Food Safety management programs from design to execution supporting the External Manufacturers network in the North America region. This is a leadership role that provides technical expertise to cross-functional teams, such as R&D, Corporate Quality, and supply chain senior management. The candidate must be versatile, able to work in cross-functional teams, and be capable of working proactively across multiple projects.  

 

How you will contribute 

You will be part of the Global Food Safety team, reporting to the Corporate Food Safety leader in NA. The scope of this role is to provide technical subject matter expertise to appropriate functions and locations within the North America External Manufacturing (EM) network. 

Main responsibilities include: 

  • Outline the food safety and sanitation strategy, priorities, and ways of working, in alignment with the Company and functional strategies for external manufacturers in the region. 

  • Review and approve food safety in design documentation. Provide guidance to External Manufacturing sites’ about Food Safety programs, such as HACCP (including validation and verification), PEM, Finished product testing, Allergen management, Foreign Material management, sanitation, pest management and cleaning programs, etc. in area of responsibility. 

  •  Champion and promote a robust food safety culture within the EM network by engaging and influencing senior stakeholders, providing technical expertise to build capability, and assessing end-to-end food safety and sanitation programs and performance 

  • Ensure Risk Assessment is employed as the key decision-making approach for Product, Process and Package Design Safety in area of responsibility. 

  • Support effective management of operational Food Safety and sanitation challenges at priority external factories, providing technical knowledge to facilitate troubleshooting and problem solving, including recommending disposition decision making based on risk assessment  

  • Review, analyze and trend Food Safety and sanitation KPIs for external manufacturing sites to proactively identify preventive actions. 

  • Communicate and showcase food safety and sanitation best practices to key stakeholders in the EM network.  

The pay range for this position is $114,500 and $171,800

  • Strong management skills, handling complexity & judgement, good business acumen coupled with extensive technical knowledge and skills. 

  • Proven track record of delivering risk-based Food Safety Programs to drive commercial outcomes, within CPG food environment. Strong manufacturing food safety and sanitation experience. 

  • Good understanding of food safety in design, must have knowledge of the commercialization process, including preliminary food safety assessments, pest management and sanitation. 

  • Project management and managing multiple priorities. 

  • Self-starter with a strong drive for results, ability to work remote with limited supervision and flexibility to adjust work schedule outside of core hours to support urgent plant and business needs.  

  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence key business partners. 

  • Sound product safety knowledge (understanding of microbiology) / food technology across product portfolio (biscuit/bars/chocolate/candy). 

  • A culture of restless curiosity and a continuous improvement mentality 

 

Required Experience: 

  • Minimum of 6-8 years’ experience in the food industry, to include but not limited to plant food safety/sanitation, food safety auditing and compliance, microbiological sampling and management. 

  • Strong technical knowledge and experience on Food Safety, including Food Safety and Sanitation programs such as HACCP, and pre-requisite programs (GMP, pest control, pathogen environmental monitoring, etc.), and technical Food Safety risk assessments. 

  • Previous experience in cross functional teams leading, supporting resolution of technical issues, issue management and necessary improvements in compliance to company’s policies and procedures. 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to effectively communicate to all functions and levels within the organization. 

  • Digitally savvy & data driven mindset. 

 

Education: 

  • MS, PhD (preferred) in Microbiology, Food Safety, Food Science, or related field. 

 

 

Travel requirements: 

  • 50% travel to locations in Canada, US, and Mexico. 

 

Work schedule: 

  • Hybrid (1 day/week on site) in the Chicago/NJ area.
