Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. Weve helped 2.5 million people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.
Our engineering organization consists of many talented Android and iOS app developers distributed across the EU and US. All app developers collaborate closely on each platform, regardless of location or specific feature squad. For day-to-day feature work, our engineers are organized into smaller cross-functional feature squads or teams. Our squads have a great deal of autonomy and are responsible for the development and architecture of their features. Squads take full ownership of their code and handle everything from concepting, design and implementation to release, maintenance and bug fixes.
We’re seeking an experienced Engineer Manager in the USA to join our growing software engineering organization. We’re made up of a set of cross-functional squads, each with a specific area of ownership across the Oura product. You will manage a team of talented mobile app engineers and will take pride in coaching and guiding them through their careers. You will also manage complex engineering projects and drive them to completion. You and your team will own the squad’s features and deliver against an ambitious roadmap that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in wearable products.
This is a remote US role (East Coast time zone required). Our main US office is in San Francisco with another office in San Diego. We also have employee hubs in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, and more, giving employees an opportunity to gather informally for occasional local co-working.
What you will do:
- Manage a team of mobile app engineers to design, build, ship, and maintain features related to health, fitness, activity and movement.
- Be part of a consumer-facing engineering organization with a charter to deliver a best in class Oura app experience.
- Oversee and manage the development and delivery of highly technical cross-functional projects, while collaborating closely with engineering teams and colleagues in the EU.
- Contribute to the planning and scoping of critical projects and own the execution and delivery of engineering efforts.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Firmware, Data, Science, Marketing and other teams across our global organization.
- Mentor your reports to develop their skills and foster professional growth.
- Provide technical leadership to your team; while you may no longer write code, you are still deeply technical and will contribute to, and sometimes lead, technical discussions.
- Evaluate trade-offs and make sound technical decisions that impact entire projects.
- Champion engineering excellence, establish key metrics, and drive continuous operational improvements.
We would love to have you on our team if you have:
- Minimum of 6+ years experience in software engineering and 3+ years managing software engineers.
- Technical degree or equivalent software engineering work experience.
- Experience shipping consumer-facing mobile applications and/or the backend services that power them.
- Experience with Agile/Scrum processes and ability to advocate for process improvements.
- Enjoy working in a mission-driven start-up environment with an ability to handle ambiguity,
- Strong communication, project management, and delegation skills. Able to drive cross-functional projects from inception to product launch.
- Strong people management skills. You proudly recognize achievements and successes and also do not hesitate to provide constructive feedback. You are also open to feedback and have a growth mindset.
- Able to maintain a good work-life balance both for yourself and your team. You understand the significance of promoting well-being, managing workload, and creating an environment that supports a healthy balance between work responsibilities and personal life.
We also appreciate if you have:
- Minimum of 8+ years experience in software engineering and 4+ years managing software engineers.
- Prior professional experience in either Android or iOS native app development.
- Collaborative development experience working asynchronously with engineering teams in different countries, time zones, and cultures.
- Experience with technical projects involving firmware, hardware and/or algorithm development (strongly preferred)
- Experience coordinating and delivering complex projects involving mobile, backend, data science, firmware and QA, while also acting as the point of contact for release management to ensure timely app releases.
- Experience delivering software products related to health, wellness, fitness, or hardware.
