Your work will change lives. Including your own.
The Impact You’ll Make
We are seeking a Principal Data Scientist to support clinical trial planning and to contextualize observed efficacy of experimental arms in trials against other active agents not studied within the trial, via non-randomized comparisons using external data sources.
At the study planning stage, you will leverage various business intelligence data - sourced from historical trials and real-world data - to support enrollment modeling, powering assumptions, biomarker-enrichment, and other study planning needs. The intent is to optimize trial design with data-driven insights.
During a trial, or shortly after conclusion of a trial, you will leverage external data sources to contextualize the observed efficacy of the experimental arm. These insights will be generated via meta-analyses, externally controlled designs using real-world data or trial data, and other sources. The intent is to inform decision making during early development.
To be successful, you will be required to have a minimum of 5 years of experience working within the life sciences industry. A strong foundation in statistical modeling, causal inference, and statistical programming, as well as experience in oncology real-world data linked with genomic sequencing information.
In this role, you will:
- Data Integration & Analytics: Leverage diverse data sources, including insurance claims, EHRs, omics data, and other real-world datasets, to generate actionable insights to support drug development
- Enrollment Modeling and Predictive Forecasting: Lead enrollment modeling efforts, applying Monte Carlo Simulations and other approaches to accurately estimate patient enrollment rates, model study timelines, and mitigate recruitment risks
- Statistical Modeling: Regression modeling using patient-level and summary-level (i.e., meta-analysis) data. Propensity score models to correct for imbalances between trial-enrolled population and external data sources
Statistical Programming: Manipulate data and effectively report the data - Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support: Work closely with colleagues in Inception Labs, Discovery, Translational Science, Clinical Operations, Clinical Development, Biostatistics, Regulatory teams, and external partners to apply insights to trial design, site selection, and patient recruitment strategies
Data Visualization & Reporting: Develop clear and actionable reports using BI tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) to present insights, enrollment forecasts, and data-driven recommendations to senior leadership and key stakeholders - Data Quality & Management: Ensure high data quality by cleaning, organizing, and maintaining datasets from various sources, enabling robust analyses and reliable decision-making
The Team You’ll Join
Reporting to the VP, Decision Science, you’ll be joining a team that will help Recursion design optimal clinical trials and support portfolio level decision making. This is a new, small group that will have expertise in causal inference and its applications in observational, real-world data and historical trial data (at the patient-level and the summary level). This will be a fun, fast-paced work environment full of passionate colleagues who are integrating cutting edge technology into drug development. Inclusiveness, respect, scientific rigor, and strategic thinking are key behavioral attributes of the team.
The Experience You’ll Need
- Master’s or PhD in Data Science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, or related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience working with RWD in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or life sciences consultancy
- Demonstrated expertise in analyzing insurance claims, EHRs, and genomic data for drug development insights
- Expert skills in at least one statistical programming tool such as R, SAS, or other languages is a must. Expertise in SQL is also a must
- Experience with BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar for data visualization and reporting
- Strong understanding of data management platforms and clinical trial management systems
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in handling large and complex datasets
