Symetra has an exciting new opportunity to join our team as a Director of Underwriting for Supplemental Health Benefits!

About the role

In this role, you will have oversight and direct profit/loss accountability for a block of business exceeding $50M and sales goals of $30M. You will manage a team of supplemental health underwriters and work closely with other members of the benefits leadership team to deliver results.

What you will do

  • Directly accountable for Supplemental Health and some Life and Disability Department/Product profit targets.
  • Review and evaluate data for Risk Decisions, Persistency Targets, Billed to Target Ratio, and Renewal Rate Increase Targets at the Regional Underwriter and case level.
  • Collaborate with the Actuarial Department regarding Pricing Changes, setting New Business and Renewal Rate Increase Targets - both ceilings and floors.
  • Management of Underwriting staff: hire, develop, mentor, define performance expectations and provide real time performance feedback, and develop goals with and for the team.
  • Assist underwriters with their decisions on complex and/or high premium cases.
  • Review competitive data and appeals from Sales and develop appropriate responses.
  • Foster creative decision-making to balance sound underwriting principles with desired premium growth.
  • Address any individual performance or developmental issues.
  • Mentor and provide underwriting oversight to individual contributors, Regional Underwriting Managers and their staffs.
  • Provide second signoff up to published authority limits and for exceptions to underwriting guidelines.
  • Understand business drivers and think strategically.
  • Effectively communicate and implement company goals and philosophy.
  • Foster positive relationships between underwriting and field staff.
  • Consult on interdepartmental issues.
  • Improve cost management by leading all aspects of efficiency while encouraging innovation.
  • Participate on broker, producer, and client calls and/or face-to-face meetings.
  • Work with sales, actuarial, claims and other internal departments to foster collaborative and transparent information sharing and relationships.

Compensation

Salary Range: $110,300 - $183,800 plus eligibility for annual bonus program  

Who You Are

  • A minimum of a four (4) year degree or equivalent business experience with a high school diploma required.
  • 8-10 years underwriting experience minimum with experience in Life, Disability, and Supplemental Health.
  • Previous management or supervisory experience required.
  • Proficiency in underwriting principles and practices.
  • Driven to meet deadlines while maintaining a high standard of service.
  • Capable of balancing and prioritizing multiple tasks in a demanding work environment.
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Strong collaboration and negotiation skills.
  • Validated relationship skills with ability to maintain and foster positive relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Some minimal travel required.

Travel:

  • Required Training & Professional Development
    All newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra’s corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
