Job Description:

Role Summary/Purpose:

The VP of Communications in Information Security oversees developing and implementing a comprehensive communication plan that aligns with the vision, mission, and objectives of the Information Security department. The VP, IS Communications will collaborate with the Information Security Leadership Team and other senior leaders cross-functionally to create and communicate clear, consistent, and engaging messages to internal and external audiences, such as employees, suppliers, clients, partners, and regulators. The VP of Communications in Information Security will also manage the development and upkeep of various communication channels and platforms, such as newsletters, websites, and events as needed.  

The successful candidate will bring strong process management and business acumen to this role, enhancing the productivity and visibility of the Information Security department, helping the team execute communications strategies, and strengthening the team’s risk management measures and reporting. The individual in this role will be a change agent and collaborative problem solver, who balances goals and risks to create efficiencies.  The individual will lead a small team of communications professionals and collaborate closely with colleagues across the enterprise—as well as external partners and vendors—to support the company’s broader communications objectives, including supporting Synchrony’s corporate communications team and leveraging existing processes, documents, channels and strategic partnerships as much as possible.

Occasionally you may be required to commute to our nearest office for in person engagement activities such as business or team meetings, training and culture events.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a strategic communication plan that aligns with the Information Security departments objectives and priorities.

  • Create and manage a communication calendar that ensures timely and relevant communication to various audiences.

  • Write, edit, and produce high-quality and compelling content, such as, articles, blogs, white papers, and presentations on current Information Security topics.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with other communication teams across the organization to ensure alignment and consistency of messaging and branding.

  • Plan and execute internal and external communication events, such as webinars, workshops, conferences, and in person speaker events.

  • Measure and report on the effectiveness and impact of communication activities and initiatives.

  • Provide communication guidance and support to the CISO and other senior leaders.

  • Support communications initiatives across Technology & Operations as needed, including raising awareness of events, training, Information Security programs, projects, risk and compliance needs.

  • Stay abreast of the latest trends and best practices in communication and information security.

  • Provide direction in the establishment of new policies, procedures and technology related to Information Security communications.

  • Develop ways to measure awareness of information security policies and procedures enterprise-wide.

  • Serve as communications liaison for Legal, Risk, Compliance, Sourcing and Audit partners.

  • Manage interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and performance management of team, including providing guidance to team members on appropriate decisioning, documentation, and processes.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree or 5+ years of experience in communication, preferably in information security or technology.

  • Proven leadership, management, and project management skills

  • Experience working in the financial services sector or another regulated industry.

  • Ability to lead change across people, processes, and technology.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex information in presentations to varying levels of leadership.

  • Ability to work in a small team environment, building and maintaining a network of contacts and coordinating with a large number of stakeholders.

  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and SharePoint)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences and channels.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of information security concepts, principles, and practices.

  • Creative and innovative thinker, with the ability to generate and execute new ideas.

  • Experience in managing communication projects and events, from planning to execution.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

  • Attention to detail and quality, with the ability to meet deadlines and deliver results.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Certification in communication, information security, or related field a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster team collaboration, build relationships and drive results

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and hit tight deadlines.

Grade/Level: 13

The salary range for this position is 150,000.00 - 250,000.00 USD Annual and is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance.

Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge.

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles.  Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles.  Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months’ time in position before they can post.  All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).
