DEPARTMENT AND POSITION SUMMARY:

The Center for Perioperative Care (CPC) and Surgery Preparation Registered Nurse (RN) will work remotely to provide essential chart reviews, care coordination, and patient education prior to scheduled surgeries. The RN will establish contact with and interview patients via phone call in advance of their schedule surgery. The purpose of the preoperative phone call and interview is to verify pertinent patient health histories, medical conditions, and medications.  The RN will then update the EMR accordingly to ensure accuracy. The RN will provide patient and surgery specific preoperative education, including medication specific instructions. The RN will also assess the patient’s chart for completion including the verification of required and necessary documents (H&Ps, consents, etc.) and pertinent studies (labs, EKGs, etc.) To reduce the risk of perioperative complications and to improve patient safety, the RN will notify the surgeons and/or anesthesiology staff of any patient concerns, patient specific needs and accommodations, or abnormal findings pertinent to the procedure. The RN will also communicate frequently with surgery office staff to coordinate care with the perioperative and surgical teams.

POSITION PURPOSE:

  • The Center for Perioperative Care (CPC) and Surgery Preparation Registered Nurse (RN) is an essential role for optimal outcomes and overall safety for the patient undergoing surgery. This is achieved by completing comprehensive chart reviews, performing patient interviews, and by providing patient specific preoperative education and instructions.

ROLE SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Review upcoming surgical assignments across multiple operating room sites within Trinity Health Ann Arbor and Livingston.

  • Perform chart reviews and update EMR to ensure accuracy.

  • Assess for chart completion: presence of necessary documents (H&P, consent, labs, EKG).

  • Call patients to interview and provide preoperative education specific to the patient and type of anticipated surgery.

  • Collaborate with office staff on coordination of care.

  • Notify surgeons/anesthesia of abnormal findings.

  • Notify the operative room staff of any patient specific needs including medical specific needs/concerns, cultural or religious needs or accommodations, and family/care team needs or accommodations.  

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education:   Graduate of an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing education program.

Experience:  Three (3) years recent experience in direct patient care as an RN with demonstrated clinical expertise in acute and/or critical care. Two or more years of Pre-op/PACU and operating room experience is preferred, though not required.

Certification/Licensure: Current Registered Nurse License in the State of Michigan

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Self-disciplined and able to perform independently, efficiently, and professionally while working remotely. Compassionate, energetic, and team oriented.

  • Will assume the responsibility to complete all reviews, interviews, patient education, and follow-up as indicated for the delegated daily patient assignment.

    • Must be well-organized and able to multitask.

    • Must be able to work well with others as timely completion of the surgery and daily assignments is a team effort.

    • Able to complete 15-20 patient calls per day (Call volumes may vary.)

    • Active participation in daily huddles and productivity touch-bases is required.

  • Comfortable working with a wide variety of medical conditions for both adult and pediatric patient populations.

  • Knowledgeable in the fields of perioperative nursing and patient care.

  • Able to gather a clinical history, identify pertinent concerns based on our established perioperative protocols and guidelines, and succinctly summarize those findings when initiating communications or requesting reviews from medical providers and/or anesthesiologists.

  • Experience in telemetry and the ability to identify abnormal cardiac studies for anesthesiologist review as per the established perioperative protocols and guidelines.

    • Prior completion of BLS, ACLS, or PALS is preferred, though not required*

    • Maintenance of active BLS, ACLS, and/or PALS Certifications are not required for this role*

  • Must be available during regular business hours (7am-3:30pm) and connected to an established and secured network (Computer and network packages will be provided at time of hire.)

  • Strong computer competence and ability to use multiple computer/medical record systems such as EPIC, Microsoft TEAMs, and Microsoft Xcel.
